For many travelers, the iconic sunrise at Mount Bromo is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. However, the most well-known viewpoint—Penanjakan 1—can become overwhelmingly crowded, especially during peak season. If you want to enjoy that golden glow without the crowds pushing around you, here are five alternative sunrise spots at Bromo where you can experience peace, beauty, and privacy.

1. King Kong Hill (Bukit Kingkong)

King Kong Hill, also known locally as Bukit Kedaluh, sits at approximately 2,600 m above sea level and rests between Penanjakan 1 and 2. It offers a similar panoramic view of Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru but with significantly fewer tourists. The name comes from a rock formation resembling a giant gorilla face.

Why it's quieter: Most tour jeeps and buses head straight to Penanjakan 1. King Kong Hill requires a short walk after parking, which deters large crowds. What you’ll see: A sweeping, angled view toward the Tengger caldera, excellent symmetry in photos, and a more natural, contemplative atmosphere.

2. Love Hill (Bukit Cinta / Penanjakan 3)

Love Hill or Bukit Cinta (Proposal Hill), located at around 2,680 m, is named after the Tengger legend of Roro Anteng and Joko Seger. It is a poignant alternative to the more busy viewpoints. Why it’s special: Romantic myth and gentle slopes offer an intimate sunrise experience without the tourist density. What you’ll see: A clear view of Mount Bromo rising from the sand sea, with Mount Semeru in the distance. Often bathed in early morning mist creating an ethereal effect.

3. Mentigen Hill (Bukit Mentigen)

Mentigen Hill lies just outside the Penanjakan area at 2,300 m, closer to Cemoro Lawang and accessible by foot or a short ojek ride. Why it’s peaceful: Hosted within local grasslands and less trafficked roads, Mentigen attracts mainly walkers and backpackers. What you’ll see: A tranquil setting perfect for sunrise and even night photography (e.g. Milky Way or pre-wedding shoots). You’ll get Mount Bromo and Batok nearly at eye level.

4. Seruni Point (Panjakan 2)

Seruni Point, also known as Pananjakan 2, sits at about 2,436 m and is accessed via stairs or a hike from the Seruni Gate area. Why it’s slightly less crowded: Travelers referring to Penanjakan 1 often overlook Seruni. Though it’s built for tourism, it remains less packed because of its relatively new infrastructure. What you’ll see: Broad views of the caldera and volcanic cones, plus well-designed observation platforms—ideal for both comfort and photos.

5. Pos Dingklik

Pos Dingklik, at 2,463 m, sits on a crossroads between access routes and is often overlooked completely. Why it’s hidden: Most people turn onto the main Penanjakan road without stopping at Dingklik. It’s small but offers unobstructed eastern views. What you’ll see: A clear alignment with Mount Batok and often plenty of open sky for dramatic sunrise colors.
